What does Organic mean?
Organic is a term used to describe a natural process of producing food for human consumption. Organic is a biologically based system of agriculture that does not allow the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides or preservatives. Organics do not permit the use of genetically modified seeds. It relies on waiting with nature in a scientific way to produce food. These standards apply through the farming, manufacturing and packaging process.
How do I know that the food is Organic?
To identify an Organic product, look for the seal of approval from a third party certification agency which oversees the process from the field to the table. The Canadian government has standards for organic production that provides the certification agencies with a minimum set of standards to abide by.
Is Organic food better for me?
Some studies have shown that food grown on an Organic farm will have higher levels of minerals and nutrients.
As chemicals are not used in the production of organic foods, the end product is free from unnatural contaminants.
Organic foods are based on unmodified seeds and since there are no long term studies in genetically modified foods, your exposure to any potential side effects of genetic modification are eliminated.
Organic farming reduces the amount of chemicals introduced into the environment and therefore helps to secure a healthy planet for the years to come.
What is Oak Manor's Philosophy?
Oak Manor Farms believes that Organic Farming and Food Production is a responsible system of Agriculture that will sustain the life of future generations. We believe in supporting the small Organic farm and strive to source our raw ingredients as close to home as possible thereby reducing our carbon footprint. We believe in paying the Farmer a fair premium for Organic Foods to help small Organic Farms remain viable. At Oak Manor, Organics is a philosophy that we are committed to, unlike other companies that saw organics as just another market opportunity.
Why do Oak Manor Organic Products cost more?
Because:
We pay the Farmer a fair premium for the source product.
Many true Organic processors are small businesses that don't have the economies of scale (including processing capacity, bulk purchasing). This gives you diversity of choices in a day when our food supply is being consolidated and food comes from less processors.
The demand for Organic products is high which pushes the price higher.
Organic Certification is an annual process and has a cost.
The strict record keeping process takes more time that translates into a higher cost.
Where else can I buy your products? Do you distribute to any stores I may have heard of?
Look for our products at any Natural Food Store in bulk or packaged, at our retail outlet or on this website.
Are there any other resources that I can use to get more information... websites, books, stores, etc?
Check the Organic Trade Association website at www.ota.org.
